UI/UX Case Study & Redesign

The Project

Along with my two other teammates we analyzed the usability of DHS.gov and set out the business needs, and how this website will fit into that equation.

  • OUR ROLE: UX/UI Designer
  • TOOLS: Miro, Figma, Excel, Google Slides.

Usability Testing

After researching the usability and layout of the United States Department of Homeland Security website we discovered that the current site is overcrowded and hard for users to navigate.

We strived to redesign the website to relieve stress of the users when trying to find what they are searching for. Through research and organization such as card sorting, persona studies, and heuristic evaluations.

Final Thoughts

Determining the Objective: The first thing we did was set out the business needs, and how this website will fit into that equation. This helped us plan our design process on a better experience that would fulfill the needs of our users. Through learning flows, color schemes, components. It made us realize that no design is perfect and there is always room for improvement to better the overall user experience. A lot of the time we could get lost on trying to pull off a certain design of the app over the user experience.

Research is Key: Research on different navigation available of competitors and going through the features of the our website was greatly helpful. It gave us a better understanding on the approach to the users. Also to see what frustrations other users may feel that is missing to better the overall experience when navigating the website.

Final Thoughts: Redesigning a website is no simple task, It takes a lot elements to take into account about the brand and what they are trying to convey through their website. Unlike designing for yourself you are redesigning a website without wanting to lose the original character.
